The Head of the British Embassy in Myanmar, Ken O’Flaherty, said in his New Year’s message that the UK Government will continue to support the peaceful and democratic future that all Burmese people aspire to.
May all Burmese people be safe, healthy and at peace in their hearts as we mark the Burmese New Year, said Ken O’Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy in Yangon.
As we mark the Burmese New Year, my thoughts and those of my colleagues are with the people affected by the devastating earthquake, and that the earthquake and its aftermath have added to the hardships that have been experienced by the people of Burma in recent times, said Ken O’Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy in Yangon.
“I admire the resilience and spirit of the Burmese people who are supporting each other even in these extremely difficult times. The UK remains firmly committed to supporting the people of Burma. The UK government has pledged a total of £25 million to help those affected by the earthquake,” said Ken O’ Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy.
He added that their support includes first aid, emergency and psychosocial care, basic health care, food, water, shelter and hygiene kits.
“In addition to the UK government’s financial support, UK citizens have also been generously donating through a dedicated public fundraising campaign for the Myanmar earthquake relief effort. The first day of the campaign raised £7.5 million and the amount continues to grow. This is a testament to the warmth and solidarity that UK citizens share with the people of Myanmar,” said Ken O’ Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy.
While we all understand that the Thingyan festival traditionally symbolizes the cleansing of the past year’s hardships and the need for recovery, we hope that the new Burmese year will bring peace of mind and better days ahead, said Ken O’ Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy.
The UK Government will continue to support the peaceful democratic future that all Burmese people aspire to, and wishes all Burmese people safety, health and peace of mind, said Ken O’ Flaherty, Head of the British Embassy.
