A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Patheingyi, Mandalay Region, the Meteorological Department said.
At around 1:00 p.m. on January 1, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 11 kilometers, about two miles south-southwest of Patheingyi.
“Today’s earthquake was quite strong. It shook like thunder. It was quite scary,” said a Mandalay resident.
Two earthquakes also struck early in the morning on January 1. At around 5:00 a.m., a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, about eight miles northwest of Lewe town.
Similarly, at 4:06 a.m., a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Yetasha town at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The Meteorological Department reported that up to 140 aftershocks were recorded until the afternoon of the second day after the strong earthquake.
