India launched a series of missile strikes on nine Pakistani posts on May 7 in what it called Operation Sindh, saying it had carried out “precise” strikes on terror camps in nine areas of Pakistan-administered territory, the Indian military said.

The strikes came days after India blamed Pakistan for a deadly attack on a tourist bus in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 11 people.

The Indian military said it had carried out “precise” strikes. The Indian government also said the Indian military’s actions were “considerate in nature” and “not provoking conflict”.

The two countries exchanged heavy artillery fire along their disputed border on May 7 after India launched a missile strike on its arch-rival Pakistan, in a major escalation of tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

There were reports of casualties on both sides. Pakistan said at least eight people were killed in the Indian attack.

India said three civilians were killed in Pakistani shelling along the disputed Kashmir border.

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said retaliation had begun and that revenge would not be long in coming.

Asif accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of carrying out the attacks to boost his popularity at home.
