The Inle Lake Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda will be temporarily closed due to a crack in the roof, according to the pagoda’s trustees.

The Inle Lake Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda will be closed from the afternoon of March 30 while technical inspection and repair work are carried out, officials said.

“It’s hard to say what to do next. We need to check with the engineering team first,” said a member of the pagoda’s trustees.

The powerful earthquake that struck at 1 p.m. on March 28 caused extensive damage to Inle Lake.

More than 2,300 houses were destroyed and more than 80 people died in the earthquake in Inle Lake, according to census takers.

The villages most affected in Inle Lake are Kayla, Zarat Gyi, Kyar Taw, and Shee Wa Gyi. The earthquake-ravaged Inle Lake is in great need of assistance.

In front of the Myanmar Chantha shop in Mandalay, people can come and charge their phones day and night, and clean water and white rice can also be purchased by those in need.

“Now, electricity has been cut off since the earthquake. We saw broken poles and fallen electric pots. We have no power and no communication, which is really a problem. At this time, Ko Kyaw Gyi is using solar power, which is very convenient. I hope those who have solar power can also help like Ko Kyaw Gyi,” said a man who came to charge his phone.

Currently, the Myanmar Chantha – Academy Akhao Shwe shop family has donated 100 million baht for the earthquake relief, and it has been announced that around 70 million baht in excess of the public donations from last year’s flood will be donated to this earthquake relief.
