The UK government is to provide additional health funding to help one million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Myanmar.
The UK government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO) has announced that it will provide health assistance to Myanmar, which is experiencing a record high in humanitarian aid.
The additional health assistance comes as the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, which is also suffering from the effects of climate change, is intensifying.
The plan to provide aid to one million people in need of health care in the first six months of 2025, including in conflict areas, includes mental health and child health programmes for more than 100,000 women and children, sexual and reproductive health programmes for more than 140,000 people, and TB and malaria treatment programmes.
It will also provide critical nutrition support to almost 90,000 people.
The UK government has announced that it will provide assistance while the US has temporarily suspended foreign aid to Myanmar, including to other countries around the world.
The statement also said that the country’s aid to Myanmar for the 2024-2025 financial year has been increased from an initial £44 million to £66 million.
The conflict in Myanmar has displaced more than 3.5 million people, and the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance across the country has reached nearly 20 million in the four years since the political transition, the statement said.
