Greenlandic leaders are unhappy with the planned visit of Vice President Jay DeVries’ wife, Ash Vance, and Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, to Greenland, an island that Donald Trump is seeking to acquire. Ash Vance is scheduled to visit Greenland this week.

Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister, Moe Gee, has said he has not invited the pair to meet, and Greenland’s potential new leader has criticized the United States for disrespecting Greenland.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans and is semi-autonomous and has been under Danish rule for about 300 years.

Although Greenland has its own internal affairs, Denmark controls foreign affairs and defense. The United States has had a military base on the island since World War II.

Trump also appears to be interested in Greenland’s rare earth minerals. Trump’s son, Donald Jr., visited Greenland before Trump’s inauguration.

The White House has announced that Vice President Ashraf Ghani will visit historic sites in Greenland during her trip.

Trump’s national security adviser is likely to arrive in Greenland ahead of Ashraf Ghani. The New York Times reports that US Energy Secretary Chris Wright will also be there.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Aggie described the US security adviser’s visit as a provocation, telling a newspaper: “What is the security adviser doing in Greenland? His only goal is to show us the world.” Surprisingly, Trump has hinted that he will take Greenland with the support of NATO, a NATO ally that includes Denmark.

Greenland is home to about 56,000 people, and almost 80 percent of the island is covered in ice. The island’s main economy is fishing, and the area has become a hotbed of interest in recent years due to its natural resources.
