Thailand has reported 33,030 new COVID-19 cases in the past week, with at least 6,000 in Bangkok, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Thailand from May 11 to 17 is 33,030, double the 16,000 cases reported the previous week.

Sukhothai and Kanchanaburi have reported two deaths from the disease and 1,918 people are hospitalized.

Bangkok has the most cases with 6,290, followed by Chonburi with 2,573, Rayong with 1,680, Nonthaburi with 1,482 and Samut Prakan with 1,442. Most of the infected people are between the ages of 30 and 39.

Dr. Thiraworatanarat, from Chulalongkorn University Medical Center, contradicted the Ministry of Public Health’s statement that the COVID-19 situation is not alarming.

The number of COVID-19 cases has been rising steadily for 11 consecutive weeks, he said.

“If the situation continues like this, the number of cases will double next week. The infections will last a long time, and the peak of the infection has been at least three months now,” Dr. Thirawora said.

Meanwhile, Loratlaplai Laruensaan, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said Bangkok is currently strengthening its disease control measures among children during the start of the school year.

MSD is providing hospitals with doctors, medicines, and equipment to treat patients, especially children aged from newborns to four years old, the elderly, bedridden patients, and those with chronic diseases. They have been instructed to prepare supplies, including vaccines and beds.

People are also advised to wear a mask and use an ATK test kit immediately if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath.
