US President Donald Trump said he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18 to end the war in Ukraine, adding that the two countries are still discussing the division of some assets.

US officials said on March 16 that they were optimistic that a Ukraine-Russia ceasefire deal could be reached within weeks after the US proposed an end to the war in Ukraine after talks in Saudi Arabia. The US said that Ukraine had accepted the agreement reached in the Saudi talks.

“We need to talk about land. We need to talk about power plants,” Trump said aboard Air Force One.

“I think both Ukraine and Russia have discussed that issue at length. We are still discussing the division of some assets,” the US president added.

The United States and Ukraine’s European allies have been pressuring Russia to accept a ceasefire in the war, but President Putin has not yet given a clear answer. Instead, Putin has said there are serious questions about the ceasefire proposal, including the terms.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made very promising remarks about a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, but U.S. President Donald Trump said in recent days that it is not yet complete.

“I would like to meet with him. We would like to talk. But we have to get a ceasefire agreement quickly,” Trump said.

Trump’s envoy, Steve Wyckoff, who spoke with Putin for hours last week, told CNN that he thinks the two presidents are going to have a really good and constructive conversation this week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on March 15 of not wanting to end the war. Zelensky warned that Russia wanted to prioritize improving the situation on the battlefield before reaching any ceasefire agreement.

On March 16, Ukraine said Russia had fired 90 Iranian-made Shahat missiles into nine Ukrainian regions.
