During Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Myanmar from August 14 to 15, the United States met with Myanmar opposition forces on August 15 to discuss assistance.

NUG Acting President Duwal Shila wrote on his Twitter account on August 15 that he had an online meeting with US State Department Counselor Tom Sullivan and US Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Michael Schiffer.

During the meeting, Duwal Shila thanked the United States for expanding direct support to improve public services and humanitarian assistance.

NUG was established by the Committee of Representatives of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) on April 16, 2021.

CRPH, NUG and its affiliates were declared terrorist groups by the National Assembly on May 8, 2021.

Tom Sullivan, who met with the Burmese opposition, replaced Derek Chauvin as the State Department’s Counselor in late June 2024. He served as the Secretary of State’s Senior Policy Advisor at the State Department, handling a wide range of issues and carrying out diplomatic work as directed by the Secretary.

Sullivan has served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary Blinken since January 2021.

Sullivan previously held positions at the State Department and the Senate. Sullivan served in similar roles under Secretary Kerry from 2015 to 2017.
