The Central Bank of Myanmar’s Monetary Policy Implementation Report states that banks’ deposits with the central bank amounted to 4,622 billion kyats, or 12 percent of the reserve currency, at the end of September 2022.
Reserve currency stood at 34,370 billion kyats at the end of September 2021, while it stood at 37,086 billion kyats at the end of September 2022, an increase of 80 percent from the previous year.
Domestic circulation amounted to 32,465 billion kyats at the end of September 2022, or 88 percent of the reserve currency, and banks’ deposits with the central bank amounted to 4,622 billion kyats, or 12 percent of the reserve currency.
Domestic circulation increased by 15 percent from the same period last year, while banks’ deposits with the central bank decreased by 25 percent from the same period last year.
The factors affecting the reserve money are net foreign assets, loans to the government sector, loans to the banking sector and other liabilities.
As of the end of September 2022, net foreign assets accounted for 36 percent of the reserve money, loans to the government sector for 82 percent, loans to the banking sector for 11 percent and other liabilities for (-)30 percent, respectively. The Central Bank of Myanmar’s Monetary Policy Implementation Report states that loans to the government sector accounted for the largest share of the reserve money.
Net foreign assets in September 2021 were Ks 14,423 billion, down by 6 percent to Ks 13,532 billion. Loans to the government sector were Ks 24,855 billion at the end of September 2021, down by 23 percent to Ks 30,571 billion at the end of September 2022, up by 23 percent from the same period last year.
