Hundreds of flights were canceled and train services were halted as a powerful storm swept through the Chinese capital Beijing and the country’s north on April 12.

Reuters reported that 838 flights were canceled at Beijing’s two main airports. The storm, which was the strongest to hit Beijing in more than half a century, brought the city’s wind warning to the second-highest level, orange.

Beijing’s landmarks and historical sites were closed as the storm was expected to last until the weekend, and the city’s 22 million residents were warned to avoid unnecessary travel since April 11.

Some state media outlets warned that people weighing less than 50 kilograms could be blown away by the wind.

Amusement parks were also closed, and nearly 300 trees fell in Beijing, despite some trees being cut down in advance.

There were no reports of injuries, although there were vehicle damage.

The storm has also brought snow to northern China.
