Chinese President Xi Jinping said on May 13 that China and Latin America will deepen ties in a speech to Latin American leaders in Beijing, denouncing the United States as a bully and an indirect criticism.
Leaders and officials from Latin America and the Caribbean have arrived in Beijing for the China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) forum.
China has boosted economic and political cooperation with Latin American countries in recent years and has urged them to unite against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent import tariffs.
Latin America has emerged as a key battleground in Trump’s confrontation with China. Latin America is under pressure from the United States to choose between the United States and China.
In a speech to the leaders on May 13, Xi praised the rapidly developing relations between Latin America and China.
“Although China is located far from Latin America and the Caribbean, both sides have a long history of friendly relations that are valued,” he said at the opening of the forum, comparing the forum to a big, strong tree.
“Only through unity and cooperation can countries safeguard world peace and stability. They can promote global development and prosperity,” Xi said.
The Chinese leader pledged $9.2 billion in loans for regional development, part of a broader plan to deepen cooperation, including in infrastructure and clean energy.
