Myanmar’s economy, which is reeling from the aftermath of a powerful earthquake in late March, is expected to contract by 2.5 percent in the 2025-26 fiscal year, the World Bank said today (June 12).
Myanmar’s gross domestic product (GDP) was more than $77 billion last year, and direct damage to infrastructure from the earthquake was more than $11 billion, or 14 percent of GDP, the report said.
More than 17 million people in Mandalay, Sagaing, Nay Pyi Taw, Bago and Magway regions were affected, with more than 9 million severely affected.
“The earthquake has had a significant impact on human lives and displacement, while deepening economic hardships. It is testing the resilience of the people of Myanmar. Recovery efforts are essential to help the most vulnerable,” said Melinda Good, World Bank Country Director for Myanmar and Thailand.
