The Malaysian foreign minister has again urged the military council to end its airstrikes that have killed dozens of people despite a ceasefire declared after the earthquake in March.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamed Hassan urged the military council to extend its ceasefire until the end of May and implement a broader ceasefire at the meeting on May 25.
On the same day, the air force bombed a wedding party in Kyaukgyi township in eastern Bago region, killing 12 people, including the bride and two 5-year-old children, the Karen National Union (KNU) said. The KNU also said 37 locals, including 13 minors, were seriously injured in the attack.
The military council announced a two-month ceasefire on April 2 after the March 28 earthquake. However, the United Nations reported on May 2 that 243 attacks, including 171 airstrikes, had been carried out during the ceasefire. The UN said more than 200 civilians had been killed in those attacks.
