Although Myanmar has managed to stabilize its foreign exchange rate, inflation is still rising due to the impact of natural disasters and internal conflicts, the World Bank has pointed out.

The US interest rate hike has led to a rise in the value of the dollar, which has led to a decline in the value of currencies in developed and regional countries.

In addition, the country’s trade deficit is moderately high and net foreign exchange outflows have led to high inflation rates due to high foreign exchange rates, rising commodity prices in trading partners, and high import prices. The annual inflation rate at the end of March 2024 was 25.33 percent, which is lower than the same period last year, but the average inflation rate reached 27.53 percent, which is higher than the same period last year.

Similar to the depreciation of currencies in developed and regional countries, Myanmar has also seen significant increases in import prices due to the appreciation of foreign exchange rates and high commodity prices in trading partners.

In January 2024, the average inflation rate was 27.89 percent and the annual inflation rate was 25.64 percent; in February, the average inflation rate was 27.64 percent and the annual inflation rate was 25.23 percent; The Central Bank of Myanmar’s Monetary Policy Implementation Report showed that the average inflation rate in March was 27.53 percent and the annual inflation rate was 25.33 percent.

To keep the inflation rate at a reasonable level, the Central Bank of Myanmar is coordinating its monetary policy with the fiscal policy of the Ministry of Planning and Finance and the trade policy of the Ministry of Commerce.
