A Myanmar sailor was injured in a fire on a Singapore-flagged container ship.
On the morning of June 9, the Singapore-flagged container ship MV Wan Hai 503 caught fire after a container explosion. 18 of the 22 crew members on board were rescued, Indian news reports said.
The Indian Coast Guard spotted the explosion and launched a rescue operation using the DG vessel. By 4:30 pm on June 9, 18 crew members had been rescued. Two of the crew members were seriously injured and four others sustained minor injuries. The injured were receiving emergency medical treatment, the report said.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Immigration, New Mangalore Port Authority and police are extending all necessary assistance to ensure timely and effective medical treatment to the rescued crew members, an ICG official said.
The ship, which left Colombo port on June 6 with 22 crew members, is expected to arrive at Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai on June 9, and caught fire about 88 nautical miles off the coast of Beypore in Kerala, according to reports.
A Myanmar national on board the ship narrowly escaped death and is receiving medical treatment, according to social media.
