The Pentagon has confirmed that it has deployed 2,000 additional National Guard troops to Los Angeles, where protests over immigration arrests are taking place.
“The Department of Defense is deploying 2,000 additional California National Guard troops to assist immigration authorities in carrying out their duties as directed by the President,” said Pentagon spokesman Capt. Champarnell.
The unrest in Los Angeles has entered its fourth day, and California Governor Gavin Nussam has said he will sue the Trump administration for sending U.S. Marines to Los Angeles.
“The U.S. Marine Corps is on a mission to protect our democracy. They are not political pawns. The Secretary of Defense is sending them onto the streets of America in violation of the law. This is an abuse of power. It has gone too far. We will sue to stop this,” Mr. Nussam wrote on X.
Since the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, immigration raids and protests against deportations have spread to major cities across the United States.
Protests have also taken place in Tampa, Florida; Boston, Massachusetts; and Houston, Austin, and Dallas, Texas.
Regarding the current tensions, US Vice President Jay Vance wrote on X: “This administration cannot be intimidated by lawlessness. President Trump will not back down.”
