Thailand and Cambodia have increased their troop deployment along a disputed border, Thai Defense Minister Phuntshom Wichayachai said on June 7.
Tensions have been rising between the two countries since a shootout on May 28 that killed a Cambodian soldier.
Wichayachai, who also serves as Thailand’s deputy prime minister, said talks with Cambodia on June 5 had been held, but Cambodia had rejected Thailand’s proposals to ease tensions.
“The Cambodian side has increased its troop deployment along the border. That has exacerbated tensions along the border. That is why the Thai government has increased our troops to take necessary measures,” Phuntshom said.
A separate report by the Thai military on June 7 said Cambodian soldiers and civilians had crossed into Thailand’s territory.
Despite calls from Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair, and China, for both countries to de-escalate tensions, Thailand and Cambodia have increased their military presence on the border.
On June 7, Thai Army Chief of Staff General Pana Klaewblaudtuk issued an order granting him control over the opening and closing of all border checkpoints along the Thai-Cambodian border.
