According to initial reports, 71 pagodas, 186 monasteries, 92 schools, 15 other religious schools, 200 departmental buildings, 289 other buildings, 1,736 residential buildings and some roads and bridges were damaged in Bago Region, resulting in 44 deaths and 234 injuries.
On April 8, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Council, Deputy Senior General Soe Win, accompanied by Union Ministers, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defense, Deputy Ministers and officials, visited Bago Region to inspect the damage caused by the earthquake, the progress of reconstruction work, and the provision of health care to those injured in the earthquake, and gave instructions on what was needed.
The Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly, the Deputy Prime Minister and members of the delegation visited the historic U Lok Mara Zain Pagoda and paid homage to the pagoda’s diamond head, During the inspection of the damaged condition of the pagoda, including the bird’s eye pagoda, the officials clearly presented the damaged condition of the pagoda. The Deputy Prime Minister ordered that the pagoda be systematically restored in stages, in accordance with the original works, as it is a historical pagoda.
The Nadaw U Lok Marazin pagoda was built and dedicated by the King of Badon, Bodaw U Waing, in 1161 AD, and was given the title “Nadaw U Yan Aung Naing”. In 1280 AD, Sayadaw U O Basa and U Asara built the Nadaw U pagoda, and built a 54-foot-tall, 72-foot-tall, and 18-foot-tall umbrella. In 1290 AD, the construction was completed, a new umbrella was donated, and the title “Nadaw U Lok Marazin” was given.
Then, the Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly, the Deputy Prime Minister and members arrived at the Taungoo Central Prison under construction in Ketumati Township. In the temporary briefing room, officials from the Prisons Department explained the progress of the prison construction work in each section.
