US President Donald Trump signed a new travel ban targeting 12 countries including Myanmar, Afghanistan, Iran and Yemen on June 4, re-enacting one of the most controversial measures of his first term.
Trump said the ban was imposed in response to the attack on a Jewish protest in Colorado in which a gas canister was used as a firebomb.
US authorities said the man who attacked the Colorado protest was an illegal immigrant.
The countries the US has banned in the new travel ban are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
Trump also imposed a partial ban on travelers from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. He said some temporary work visas from those countries would be allowed.
The bans will take effect on June 9, the White House said.
“The recent terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado, highlights the extreme dangers that come from foreign nationals who come into our country without proper vetting,” Trump said in a video message released by the White House and posted on X.
“We don’t want them,” Trump said.
The ban comes after the United States imposed sanctions on Canada, Trump’s order states that it will not affect athletes competing in the 2026 World Cup, which is co-hosted with Mexico, nor will it affect athletes competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
