The extreme daily temperatures on March 18 included 44.3 degrees Celsius in Chauk Township, 42 degrees Celsius in Myingyan and Minbu Townships, 41.7 degrees Celsius in Sinphyu Kyun Township, 41.8 degrees Celsius in Magway Township, 41.7 degrees Celsius in Nyaung U Township, 41 degrees Celsius in Taung Dwin Gyi Township, 40.8 degrees Celsius in Mandalay’s Tada U (Air Weather Forecast) and Sagaing Township, and 40.7 degrees Celsius in Aung Lan Township and Myin Mu Township, the weather service said.

However, while temperatures in seven regions including Nay Pyi Taw may rise to 40 degrees Celsius, weather observer U Win Naing said that these are not heat waves or unusual high temperatures.

“During March 14-20, daytime temperatures in Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Bago, Nay Pyi Taw, Magway, Mandalay and Sagaing (lower) regions may continue to rise to 39 degrees Celsius and above 40 degrees Celsius. These regions are also experiencing normal high temperatures during the summer period (March to May), so this is not an unusual temperature increase or a heat wave,” U Win Naing wrote on his social media page.
