PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final. The result was a blow to the prestige of the Champions League final, but it also showed that PSG had the qualities to be a champion. PSG won the Champions League for the first time and set a record that had never been achieved before. From the 1955-56 season, when the European Cup was first held, until last season, no team had ever won a Champions League final by 5 goals. There have been teams that have won by 4 goals. In the 1973-74 season, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid drew 1-1, but Bayern Munich won 4-0 in the replay. In the 1988-89 season, AC Milan beat Sturm Graz 4-0. In the 1993-94 season, AC Milan beat Barcelona 4-0. Apart from those three games, there has never been a Champions League final where the deficit has been more than three goals.
Now, PSG have recorded the most convincing final in Champions League history, beating Inter Milan 5-0. In fact, PSG have already shown their quality before the final. Although they only finished 15th in the League Phase, they faced top teams such as Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. So they struggled and in the knockout stages, they had to overcome Premier League rivals such as Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal. PSG have become a better team by facing good opponents. The players’ mental confidence has also increased .
Coach Enrique has been full of confidence since he took charge of the team. That’s why he didn’t show any signs of being shaken when he lost a key player like Mbappe, and he boasted that he had now built a team that was truly a football club. PSG, while under previous coaches and sports directors, relied on big names, has now shifted its focus to signing players who can really benefit the team under current coach Henrikh Mkhitaryan and football consultant Luis Campos. This doesn’t mean they’re not signing big names. Dembele and Khabarovsk are already big names in their previous teams.
