Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has said that captain Cristiano Ronaldo has no plans to retire despite being over 40.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has made 219 appearances for Portugal and scored 136 goals, making him the all-time leading goalscorer for the national team.
Despite being over 40, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the most important player in Portugal’s national team and is included in the squad for tonight’s UEFA Nations League match.
Portugal coach Martinez has said that Cristiano Ronaldo is still important to the team and has no plans to retire.
“Ronaldo helps the team on the pitch and is a role model for the players off the pitch,” Martinez said. “It’s great for young players like Joao Nelves and Moura to meet and talk to Ronaldo. I think the talk about Ronaldo retiring is like the weather forecast. Everyone has their own opinion. But no one can say for sure. Even Ronaldo himself has not said anything about his retirement plans yet.”
Ronaldo has not yet announced his retirement plans and is reportedly keen to play for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup.
